an you describe your character in "New Best Friend?"
I play Sydney and she is the prerequisite T&A of this type of movie. She's just a swinger, she does a lot of drugs, and she's just really crazy. [The film] kind of talks about her having a checkered past. I don't think it was trying to make any social statement, but I just think that like any 18 year-old girl, she's just trying to try everything once.
Is this character far from your own personality?
Yes, now, especially.
Is it liberating to be wild in a film?
It's always fun and I really trusted the director. They can tell you if you are being too crazy or too drunk, and reel you in. There was a great trust because there was a female director, and one who was close to the issues at hand. She actually grew up kind of in my neighborhood; I went to school with her little sister.
What interested you in this role in the first place?
I liked the script. I thought it was an exploration of how these different personality types dealt with each other, within their little microcosm of a world. I just liked it and I thought it was a good exploration of their personalities.
You've got “Pumpkin” coming out soon, too. What's your character in “Pumpkin?”
Let me tell you the story - it's with Christina Ricci and we are trying to win the 'Sorority of the Year' contest against these blonde bombshells across the street that we call the Mastodons. We figure that we've got it in the bag and we pick the Special Olympics as our 'Sorority of the Year' charity. Christina Ricci falls in love with one of the Special Olympians. [My character] thinks that's absolutely disgusting and that retardation is contagious. I rat her out to the sorority and our former roommate-ship and best friendship goes sour as she searches for true love.
You've also been busy with "Briar Patch."
I adore “Briar Patch.” I play Inez Macbeth, I'm from the mountains, and I'm the quintessential beaten wife. I live with Henry Thomas and I decide to dispatch his best friend to kill him so that I can pursue my true love. My professional, spiritual advisor has told me that I've already met my true lover, the person I'm destined to be with for the rest of my life. So that's my search for my true love, and I find true love, eventually. I love “Briar Patch.”
